Sustainable fishing practices on the productivity of fishermen in coastal Tanzania: Evidence from Nungwi village

Sustainable fishing practices are vital for balancing environmental conservation with the socio-economic well-being of fishing communities. This study assessed the influence of sustainable fishing practices on fishermen’s productivity in Indian Ocean fishing at Nungwi Village. Specifically, it examined the role of stock monitoring niches, the effect of aquatic waste management, and the influence of awareness campaigns on clean fishing on fishermen’s productivity. The study is grounded in the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework. The study adopted an explanatory research design that examined the causal relationship between the independent variables and the dependent variable. Data were collected using structured questionnaires administered to 109 fishermen selected through simple random sampling from the population of 150 local fishermen who actively engaged in fishing activities. The study employed descriptive statistics, including means and standard deviations, and inferential statistics, particularly multiple regression analysis, by using IBM SPSS version 27.1.0. The findings show that all three study independent variables, which are stock monitoring, aquatic waste management, and awareness programs, significantly influenced the productivity of the fishermen positively. The study concluded that sustainable fishing practices contributed to environmental conservation and economic success among fishermen, leading to productivity in Indian Ocean fishing in Nungwi Village. It is recommended that the government strengthen the sustainable fishing practices in terms of stock monitoring, implementation of aquatic waste management policies, and awareness programs via Beach Management Units in order to improve fishermen's productivity at Nungwi Village.
